Local Happenings In Portland

Post by Scarecrow » Fri Nov 11, 2016 5:25 pm

I'm thinking that once or twice a week, to give people a bit of flavor for things happening around the city, some of us locals can write things happening around the city to help people get a solid feel of the city and the atmosphere of the real life city and help them to map out what they want to do or where they want to go.

If you have something to add that you know happening around the city, post your own. Let's try to make this a communal effort.

To start things off!

Homeless Crisis: Portland is in the grips of one of the worst homeless crises of the country. On every street dozens, if not hundreds, of homeless crowd the city streets and camp on the sidewalks or in the doorways of businesses. Or even inside of businesses if they can find a way in. On hiking trails or under bridges, homeless camps are formed sometimes overnight disrupting business or annoying neighbors as they are practically trapped unable to do anything to move them, and the police are powerless to do anything to move them away and have nowhere to put them as the local shelters are filled to capacity.

Racial/ Sexual/ Gender politics: Racial politics are at an all time high in Oregon, particularly in the city of Portland, as citizens take to the streets to take up the cause of civil rights or gender politics or sexual orientation. Choose your cause, there's people fighting for it within the progressive epicenter of the state that is Portland. However, outside the city in the more rural areas there are not many fans of progressive movements and are more conservative about such matters.

National Politics: After the election, regardless of which side you stand on, the city is in an uproar as of November 9th as citizens took to the streets to protest the results of the election. Thousands of citizens are marching the streets at night voicing their disfavor to the newly chosen President. Most of those involved have been peaceful, marching down the streets and chanting and waving signs. However, they have been disruptive in that they are blocking major streets, marching down and blocking major interstates and blocking the major bridges in and out of the city. As of November 10th, the tone of the protest has changed as the blac-block protesters and anarchists have joined the protest and chosen to begin causing damage and destroying property and vehicles to air their own form of disfavor and be heard. The local authorities, of course, discourage this behavior but realize they are completely overwhelmed in trying to do anything against it realizing that if they try to step in it may make things worse against such overwhelming rather than staying hands off and stepping in when things get really out of control.
